Shell Exploration and Production Co. (Shell EP) teamed with Accenture to create a single IT platform based on SAP R/3. Accessible by some 17,000 users in 22 locations around the globe, the new system enables the company to increase operational performance and efficiency on the path to high performance.
Part of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies, Shell EP participates in exploration and production ventures in more than 36 countries and employs approximately 28,000 staff. Its business activities extend from the search for hydrocarbons to the delivery of oil and gas at refineries and shipping points. Shell EP aims to maximize its upstream strengths by focusing on four key portfolio areas: existing oil, new material oil, more integrated gas and more unconventional oil.
Business Challenge
Shell EP's global operations were supported by local processes and a multitude of bespoke systems and standalone instances of SAP— the complexity and cost of which threatened to impair the efficiency of the company's operations. In response, Shell EP decided to standardize and integrate its key processes and systems onto a single IT platform. It teamed with Accenture to create a global solution based on a common SAP R/3 enterprise software platform and associated processes, from work management through procurement and logistics to finance and reporting.
How We Helped
A key differentiator in Shell EP's SAP program has been the very strong relationship with Accenture—this has allowed Shell to draw on a highly talented and delivery-focused resource pool, available at short notice from all corners of the world to support this global program. This ambitious effort focused on consolidating and harmonizing Shell EP's existing systems and implementing standard processes to help drive high performance.
Drawing on its global network of process-skilled resources, proven methods and tools, and extensive experience with both the industry and global enterprise solutions, Accenture developed an innovative approach to enhancing and cost-effectively implementing the new functionality across Shell EP's numerous operating locations. The team implemented a wide spectrum of SAP-based functionalities and integrated additional common systems with SAP solutions (including eProcurement, SAP NetWeaver Portal, SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence and xIEP) to replace more than 100 legacy systems.
To drive the effort, Accenture and Shell EP established a central development and support organization in Malaysia that provided business process skills, testing, configuration, conversion and integrated planning skills. To help smooth the transition to the new processes and systems, Accenture developed an organizational change plan that included eLearning programs and a comprehensive online training portal.
High Performance Delivered
Shell EP now has a common system—accessible by some 17,000 users in 22 locations around the globe—supporting everything from finance to plant maintenance, logistics, procurement and business intelligence processes. The solution is enabling Shell EP to increase operational performance and efficiency through the sharing of best practices, standardization of business processes and greater transparency and comparability of information across the organization.
The solution supports Shell EP in achieving its current priorities, including resource base growth, effective project delivery, operational excellence and a competitive cost structure. With this flexible foundation, Shell EP is positioned for the future with stronger ability to enable new technologies, processes and business initiatives as they emerge—helping the organization lead its industry.
