Tell us about your Accenture Career Experience? Having completed high school in Canberra, I joined Accenture as a graduate from Sydney University two and a half years ago. My work/life balance is pretty good - I still play for the university open side Australian Football League AFL team. We train a couple of nights a week and compete in the First League competitions on Saturdays. I’ve also had the opportunity to travel interstate with Accenture.
What are you currently working on? For the past seven months I’ve been working in Melbourne delivering mobile TV for a major telecommunications company. Mobile TV allows 31 pay TV channels to stream across mobile handsets. This is a cutting-edge project and Accenture is heavily involved. We’ve been building the platform from scratch in affiliation with our offshore resources from Italy and France.
How has Accenture shaped your skills? The project has given me the opportunity to do some real nuts and bolts work. Normally as a technical architect you don’t always get down to the bottom level. On this project, we’ve been going to data centres to actually cable up the servers.
If you have that nuts-and-bolts knowledge, then you really have the confidence to provide useful suggestions to the client about the problems that it is facing.
What do you enjoy about working for Accenture? I still get asked what I most enjoy about my job. It’s almost a cliché but in my case I have to admit that it really is the challenge. I like working with smart people. I like the constant change, and the certainty that what I am doing today will be different from what I will be doing tomorrow.
I am also lucky–I enjoy accumulating experience in a particular subject. My job gives me the opportunity to remain at the forefront of the technologies I am interested in. I suppose that makes me a natural Accenture fit. One of the reasons Accenture is better than its competitors is because we really care about the detail of our work. Other vendors just aim to meet expectations; our philosophy is to deliver beyond expectations. And that’s something I enjoy doing.
