Background
I am half Inuit, from Pangnirtung, Nunavut. I have lived all over Eastern Canada, in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nunavut and Nova Scotia. Currently I attend Dalhousie University, in Halifax. I row competitively during the summer and fall; and snowboard during the winter. During the upcoming year, I will be filling the role of Vice President of the Dalhousie Undergraduate Economics Students' Association. I also volunteer as an Advisor for Junior Achievement's Company Program while in Halifax.
Role and Responsibilities
During my summer with Accenture in 1998, I was assigned to a government project in Hull for an eight-week period, where I joined the Application Maintenance team. I developed a database for a system to keep track of the time when employees were on vacation, on training, or away from the office. I met with the team manager to determine the user requirements. I then came up with a prototype for it and, once approved, began the full design. When it was finished, we tested the system by adding new records and seeing how it would allow dates to be entered. I wrote a user manual for this system and it is still in use today. I also did some Year 2000 testing on applications used by the Department. In addition to my role on the project, I attended the weekly team meetings and had the chance to record meeting minutes. I also chaired a bi-weekly team meeting. During the first week, I did Computer Based Training for Microsoft Access, which I used to create my Time Tracking System.
During my second summer in 1999 with Accenture, I was assigned to the Health Research project, this time in Ottawa. Here I assisted my team with things like photocopying or creating presentations for meetings or proposals. I also spent time learning the basics of HTML as I helped update and create links for the project's website. Creating a database was another project for this summer. This time it was for a Website List Serve. It had the capability to sort all records by name, location or institution. It also let you decide how you were going to distribute the material to these recipients.
Upon my return in 2000 with Accenture, I was assigned the Facilities and Services team. I assisted the team by doing Service Attendant duties and filling in for positions where needed. I also helped in organizing the office's year end gala and created a training manual for the team’s different positions. I created office guide brochures for each of the workstations in our facility and created a database. This data base was created for the Ottawa office and its visitors. It contains electronic copies of the office guide brochures as well as a Discussion Forum, a Photo Gallery and the Canada Office Directory. This database was a bit of a challenge as I was not familiar with the application that I used to create it.
The last three summers with Accenture, I've been assigned the Student Coordinator for the ASSIP program. This has involved many activities which include: liaising with potential students, preparing orientation materials for the summer and providing support to the students during their term with Accenture. I have also been provided with the opportunity to continue my ASSIP like projects, where I've worked on projects concurrently with ASSIP. In 2001 I was on the Retail Outlet Support System (ROSS) team where I provided third level support to a Canadian crown corporation and provided SAP support to a large corporation who implemented the system in the United States. In 2002 I rejoined the Indian and Northern Affairs team, this time for the Quality Management team, where I worked on improving their business processes. 2003 proved to be a great summer with Accenture, posing new challenges. My role as Student Coordinator expanded as decision making became a greater responsibility. I joined the HR team where I worked with HR Operations and recruiting, doing a number of tasks that contributed to the operations of Accenture. I was also able to learn more about Employee Relations. During this time I learned the importance of time management when juggling a number of tasks at once.
Education and Career Aspirations
I plan to graduate from Dalhousie in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts, Majoring in Economics with a Minor in Business. After graduation I am looking at attending school for a year abroad, then joining Accenture as a full time consultant.
