How long have you worked at Accenture?

I joined Accenture in 2004—my first job after graduating from the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade. I majored in Japanese for business, which has been a great asset in my career.

What made you choose Accenture?

I attended numerous interviews with firms looking for recruits, but Accenture was by far the most impressive. Although the salary they offered wasn’t necessarily the highest, I really liked the comprehensive training that the company offers. I thought Accenture seemed like a great place to build a career!

What is your current role?

I am currently a team lead on a project that services a client in China, Korean and Japan. Our team of 17 supports the client with finance and accounting services in the China region, and cross-functional services (procure to pay and record to report) in Korea and Japan.

What have been some of your previous roles at Accenture?

My first project at Accenture involved providing accounts receivable for a client in Japan.

How has Accenture helped you to formulate and then achieve your career goals?

I’ve been working for the company for four-and-a-half years and I’ve been impressed by the training the company has given to help me along my career development path. I’ve done online and classroom-based training, and have traveled to Japan to be trained by client prior to handover. The company has helped me to develop as a team lead over this period, and has provided great leadership training to help me meet my goals.

What does your typical day consist of?

The first thing I do is check my calendar for upcoming meetings and then respond to e-mails. I prioritize my e-mails before attending to them. I then get the routine work done and am constantly ensuring that my client’s needs are properly met. That’s really the most important part of the job. I generally have several meetings a week, and these often are in the afternoons. I also check the next day’s calendar in the afternoon so that I can prepare for any meetings that might be coming up the following day.

What are the positives of working for Accenture?

The training and the opportunities for personal and career growth it provides.

What are some of the challenges you’ve experienced while working for Accenture—and how have you overcome them?

The doubts at the beginning of each new project! One relies on colleagues and mentors to help one through this tough period. Also as one builds up experience it gets easier. I always find knowledge transfer quite a challenge. It’s very important to get the client’s resource to share his or her full experience so that the outsourced service provided by Accenture is at the same level as the service provided by the company itself. This can be tricky, but Accenture has great experience in this area.

What excites you most about the work that you do?

I am motivated by the recognition I receive from Accenture and my client.

Are you involved in any community or charity programs? Please describe what you do and why.

I do regular community work through my church. It’s very important to give back to society and to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

Tell us a bit about your family.

I live at home with my parents—and my “second brother,” a Chihuahua dog called Marlboro. Sometimes I think he may be the favorite son! I also have a wonderful fiancée.

What’s your personal goal—and how is what you have learned at Accenture helping you to achieve it?

I want to become a specialist in the area in which I am currently working—finance and accounting. Since I did not major in accounting at university, I am attending classes after work. A long-term goal is to be a good mentor as well as a good leader, committed and able to help members of my team reach their full potential.

Accenture can be a pressurized work environment—how do you strike a good work/life balance? Does the company help you to do this?

Planning is the key. Of course there are times when there is a lot of work pressure and one simply has to work long hours, but in general I think that the key is to plan your work and schedule well. Nobody should have to work overtime regularly.

Accenture has helped a lot by opening a number of clubs for cultural and sporting activities in Shanghai. I usually choose to play basketball—I think it is a great way to improve one’s communication skills and to meet people from elsewhere in the organization. It’s great fun too!
