Education is the focus for Accenture’s corporate citizenship efforts in Indonesia. With that in mind, Accenture recently provided a library, cleaned up classes and rehabilitated two elementary schools that were affected by the February 2007 and January 2002 flood disasters in Jakarta.
Working together with a foundation established by Indonesia’s largest news media and publishing house Kompas – Gramedia, Accenture was able to provide more than 1500 books at a discounted rate. In addition, contributions from staff were used to buy a computer to log book titles and the traffic of books being borrowed and returned. As a precautionary measure, the library has been moved to the second floor to prevent it from being flood-washed, should that recur.
“To be able to provide knowledge to our younger generation, we need to provide the means to reach that goal,” said country managing director Julianto Sidarto. “Developing interest and finding ways for the students to come back to the library also needs to be sustained. Accenture will work with the schools to make the library as a useful source for these students.”
“We have received all the donations people can think about after we were hit by the flood. From school books, stationary, uniforms and school bags,” said a principal from one of the schools. “But no one has ever thought of rehabilitating the school, or even yet, thinking more about the future of the students by providing a library. Accenture’s contribution will certainly last long.”
In other corporate citizenship work, Accenture has recently also provided a multi-media library to a foundation providing extracurricular activities for pre-school children.
