Meet Chong Chuan Neo:

Chong Chuan Neo draws inspiration through interesting work and mentoring

Chuan Neo says one of her keys to success has been a willingness to do more and take calculated risks.

What is your role at Accenture?

I am the Travel and Transportation industry lead for Products in Asia Pacific and the region’s client relationship senior executive for Johnson & Johnson.

What career path has brought you to where you are today?

I have been with Accenture for 17 years, always in Consulting, working all over Asia Pacific.

What do you think has been the key to your success at Accenture?
The key to my success has been a willingness to do more and take calculated risks, a focus on building the practice and mentoring new senior executives, speaking up on issues that matter, and leveraging the Accenture’s global power.
What inspires you to come to work each day each day?
I am inspired by the opportunity to be involved with significant and interesting client opportunities—clients who challenge us to bring more value and ideas, leading a smart and motivated team and working with leaders who listen with their head and heart.

As a woman who has reached a top leadership position, what do you wish you had known “back then” as you were making your way in your career?
I wish I had known that it is okay to be different from all the male senior executives who I had reported to. There were no women role models in Singapore before I became a senior executive. I also wish that I had challenged leadership more on matters that I didn’t agree with.

What has been most influential in helping you succeed at Accenture?
The senior executives who have mentored me, taking into account my aspirations and limitations, have been most influential in helping me succeed. They gave me their time and had provided honest, constructive criticism as well as encouragement and tips on how to succeed, not just in the company but in life. I try to do the same for my team.

What hobbies and interests do you make time for?
I like running and working out, which helps keep my mind clear. I also spend time with helping less fortunate individuals.

What are you most looking forward to – both professionally and personally?
Personally, I look forward to keeping fit both physically and mentally. Professionally, I want to contribute to the company and make a difference to our people and clients with whom I interact with daily.

On the personal side…
Hometown: The state of Malacca in Malaysia and Singapore
Current home: Singapore
Education: Bachelor degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from National University of Singapore
What are your top three “secrets to success”?
Be in the moment; sincerely care for others; exhibit a willingness to do more and get out of your comfort zone.
What are your top three ways to balance life and work?
Prioritize and be in control; learn to say “no” if required; do one thing that is most important to you every day.
Favorite technology: Wireless
Favorite way to recharge: Run for 30 to 40 minutes
Music: I have four iPods, programmed with pop, classical and light jazz in English, French, Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Favorite book: Gone with the Wind
I love it... when I see results in my efforts both professionally and socially.
I dislike… people who exploit others and situations for themselves.
I dream… of being happy as I am now forever.
