An Internet site for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund

The Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is one of the UK's leading charities. It directly supports the work of over a thousand doctors and scientists searching for new answers to cancer. ICRF was one of the first charities to establish a strong web presence in the mid-nineties, but like many pioneers its web development strategy grew static. Once support for a new Internet strategy was agreed, Accenture spent a month talking to the heads of the various departments at ICRF, and to many other stakeholders within the organisation, to identify exactly what they wanted from their website.

We put together an outline plan for progress, and then worked with ICRF to craft a mission which reflected the ethos of the organisation as it might appear on the Internet:

"The Imperial Cancer Research Fund will provide the preferred Internet site for comprehensive information on cancer for UK patients, carers, families and friends. It will provide visitors and existing donors with opportunities to support the Imperial Cancer Research Fund."

The new site would provide detailed practical information on many aspects of cancer, and access to choices on fund-raising support. It was important not to exclude the scientific community, and rapid access to the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's scientific forum was also to be a feature. An outside agency was appointed to handle the design and navigation elements of the site, with Accenture providing technical insights. We also provided programme management and alliance advice and, thanks to a lot of hard work – most of it carried out by ICRF themselves – the site went live on schedule. The new site avoided the obsolescence problem by featuring a high concentration of easily updateable sections. Since launch, the site has kept ICRF very much at the forefront of its field, and proved a valuable fundraising conduit too.

The whole experience has succeeded in raising the importance of eCommerce within the culture of ICRF – and with so many people involved in both the design and build of the site, there's still a very real sense of ownership and pride in their web presence. For this project, we worked on a pro-bono basis, as part of our ongoing commitment to support good causes throughout the world.
