The lessons he learned as a military man were “very transferable” to consulting, says Greg Anderson, senior manager in the Natural Resources operating group. “Leadership, discipline, organization, teamwork, and doing what it takes to get the job done are some of the areas in which military experience directly applies to consulting work.
Every day I draw upon my learnings and experiences from the military to help create innovative solutions that really work for clients.” Greg says. “Accenture is definitely a place where former military people can succeed. I know of dozens of people with military backgrounds in every corner of Accenture who are doing well.”
Greg is currently leading a strategic sourcing effort for a natural resources company with global operations. “This effort is focused on improving the client’s ability to source inputs more effectively, reducing costs and building skills within its organization,” Greg explains.
“I truly enjoy and look forward to working with people from other geographies and cultures. The natural resource industry is very global and our practice has experts in such diverse geographies and cultures such as China, Brazil, Eastern Europe, South Africa and Australia.”
Besides the obvious time zone and language differences, Greg says that there are differences in working style, communication, and approach to business and life. “As someone who lived in Germany for three years while in the military, I think I’ve developed an appreciation for the value these diverse experiences bring to our clients.
One of Accenture’s collective strengths is bringing together each of our global colleagues to focus on solving a client’s problem in a collaborative manner,” Greg says proudly. Greg thrives on Accenture’s work ethos: the challenge of solving complex problems which have a direct positive impact on a client’s business and invigorating team interaction.“The learning curve is incredible, and the enthusiasm of our people coupled with the value we bring to the client make the job very enjoyable,” Greg says.
It’s not all work. Greg says, “On the weekends I like to spend quality time with my family and pursue an occasional home improvement project.” Anderson says he also enjoys training for and competing in triathlons and running races. “I think I’ve raced over 25 triathlons while at Accenture, from sprint to Ironman distance (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run).”
